Hi. I see that no one has posted since July, but I thought I'd give it a shot anyway because I'm frustrated and fed up and not sure where to go. This summer I rented a house with two other girls in the town where I go to school. We signed a lease and paid a $100 deposit. The house was a pig sty when we moved in and there was no regular trash pick-up. The landlords said we could leave a couple of bags a week on the porch and they'd drive up from where they lived (two hours south) every weekend to collect the trash, throw it in the back of the van and transport it back to their house. We knew these guys (a father and a son who had just graduated from the univerisity) were shady from the get-go. We knew that they saw three girls and wanted to take advantage. There were no other options for places to live in the summer for us because we had started looking so late --- so, we moved in and cleaned the place up. Fast forward a few months, among various other lapses in landlording, trash hasn't been picked up regularly (at one point 10+ bags were piled up in 90 degree heat, disgusting), one of the landlords had a screaming match with us because we called him out on it. We move out according to our lease and leave the place cleaner than when we moved in. They're supposed to show up on move-out day to collect the keys, but never show up. We call them. They say they'll mail our deposits back to us. Wait a long time, no deposits back. We practically stalk these guys for a few months and finally run into one of them at another house they rent out. He acts like we made no attempt to call him, then says, "Well, in order for me to give your deposits back, you have to give us your keys back." Pretty much knew when we gave the keys back, we weren't getting anything, but we gave them back anyway. So, now we've fulfilled all obligations to these guys. It's January and no deposit back and no letter as to why we aren't getting a deposit back (i.e. they found the place fire-bombed or something). We looked into going to small claims, but #1 there isn't a small claims court near us, and #2 it wouldn't work out financially to our advantage.

I realize $100 isn't a lot, and we should just let it go. The thing is, these guys are trying to rent their places out again.

My question here: is there anything like the better business bureau for renters that I can go to and file a report on these guys that would make it harder for them to try and rent out or sell their properties?

These guys looked at us like three girls they could take advantage of--and did, I don't want them to get away with it.

Is there anything I can do?

I'd definately complain the the better business bureau, even this much "too late." I'd also try and find a website for your area where you can rate your landlord and give them the lowest rating possible. There's no chance of getting your money back, short of kidnapping.

tenantdatabase: tenant reference

Hi,

Many people have said to me there should be a database for renters to determine the desirablity of landlords. Maybe I could have a reverse look up on my site one day. There are slumlords, and you got caught becuase you left your run too late and had little time and choice.
Sounds like you pride yourself in the presentation of your home, you can list yourself for free on our database as a future reference.
www.allabouttenants.com you just have to give us a call.
